Pluto LNG Flare Towers

Pluto LNG Flare Towers
Structural Engineering Materials & Durability

Replacement flare tower design for cyclone-prone coastal environment, featuring enhanced structural integrity and durability for critical gas processing infrastructure.

Location:

Karratha, WA

Client:

Woodside Energy Ltd

Project Overview

Derrick site A and B flare towers were existing steel tube lattice towers constructed as part of the Pluto LNG project. These towers supported stainless steel tube risers, which carried gas by-products to be burnt off.

Challenge

BG&E was commissioned to assess the existing flare towers, which were found to be structurally deficient as they were not designed for the cyclonic winds which were common in the region.

Solution

Our initial approach was to strengthen the existing towers; however, Woodside subsequently instructed us to design replacement towers. The replacement towers were suitably detailed for both strength and durability due to proximity to the cyclone-prone coastline.

Outcome

The project delivered structurally sound flare towers capable of withstanding the harsh cyclonic coastal environment while maintaining safe and reliable operation of critical gas processing infrastructure.
