LNG Outer Containment Tank

LNG Outer Containment Tank
Structural Engineering Materials & Durability

188,000m³ LNG storage tank with advanced post-tensioned concrete design capable of containing LNG at -160°C in the event of inner tank failure.

Location:

Darwin, NT

Client:

Bechtel / Thiess TKK

As engineering consultants to Thiess TKK, BG&E undertook the structural design of the concrete outer containment walls and base slab of a 188,000m³ LNG storage tank. The walls were designed to contain LNG at a temperature of -160°C in the event of a failure of the steel inner tank.

Key Technical Features

The design incorporated several innovative features to handle the extreme thermal and structural demands of LNG containment, including specialised cryogenic steel reinforcement and advanced post-tensioning systems.
