Australia's first one-stop rail maintenance operation, featuring state-of-the-art facilities with capacity for 25 coal trains and comprehensive civil engineering infrastructure.
Nebo, QLD
Pacific National / Parsons Brinckerhoff
$180M
Project Overview
The new $180M state-of-the-art Nebo Train Maintenance Facility near Mackay in Queensland is the first rail infrastructure in Queensland and the first to be designed as a one-stop operation in Australia.
Comprehensive Design Scope
BG&E designed all buildings within the facility, including:
- Maintenance building with associated administration facility
- Wash-down building
- Large warehouse
- Wheel lathe building
- Turntable
- 2 provisioning buildings including sanding system and fuel farm
- Gatehouse
- Water treatment facility
- Water storage dam and tanks
- Fire water storage
- Sticky coal elevated ramp
- TCU and locomotive testing facility
Civil Engineering Excellence
The project featured significant civil engineering challenges:
- Rail Infrastructure: Design and documentation of 7km of rail, including a comprehensive rail maintenance yard
- Road Access: Design and documentation of 6km of service road to TMR (Transport and Main Roads) standard
- Major Culvert Crossings: Design and documentation of 3 major corrugated steel pipe culvert crossings:
- 14 x 3.6m CSPs
- 9 x 3.3m + 14 x 1.8m CSPs
- 9 x 1.2m CSPs
- Flood Management: Flood study for 3 large catchment areas (up to 125ha) to determine upstream afflux flooding effects
Construction Support
BG&E provided:
- Production of all civil specifications
- Construction support throughout the project
- Involvement in road safety in design audits and review
Outcome
Delivery of Australia’s first integrated one-stop rail maintenance operation, setting a new benchmark for rail infrastructure efficiency and operational capability in the coal transport sector.
