Karratha–Tom Price Road

Karratha–Tom Price Road
Civil Engineering Flooding & Hydrology

Concept design for 280km road through diverse terrain from flat coastal areas to rugged Chichester Ranges gorge country with strategic waterway management.

Location:

Pilbara Region, WA

Client:

Main Roads WA

Concept design for sections of the proposed Karratha–Tom Price Road (280km). Sections varied from flat country in the vicinity of Karratha and the Fortescue River, to extremely rugged gorge country in the Chichester Ranges. Special attention was paid to the road’s relationship to waterways to avoid crossings where possible, minimise crossing lengths and avoid skewed crossings.

The preferred alignments were driven and/or walked to establish real on-the-ground conditions, while the waterway configurations were checked against flows and the appropriateness of bridge, culvert and floodway options were determined.
