South West Creek Flood Study

South West Creek Flood Study
Flooding & Hydrology Rail Engineering Digital Engineering

Detailed 2D hydraulic modeling of 37,000ha area assessing railroad development impacts for BHP Billiton's RGP6 project near Port Hedland.

Location:

Pilbara, WA

The South West Creek Flood Study consisted of 2D hydraulic modelling carried out to assess flood extents and impacts of the railroad development works to be undertaken near Port Hedland as part of the BHP Billiton Iron Ore’s Rapid Growth Project 6 (RGP6).

A detailed 2D model was set up using MIKE Flood software, covering an area of 37,000ha inclusive of the major heavy haulage rail lines connecting Port Hedland to the main Pilbara mining centres, as well as South West Creek and South Creek estuaries and South Hedland. The analysis provided better understanding of local waterway network behaviour than 1D modelling conducted as part of previous studies at the same location. Study results were crucial for highlighting criticalities and for recommending local drainage improvement works, as well as further hydraulic assessments to be undertaken where more detailed investigations were deemed necessary.
